After having attended my first furry convention in 1999, Anthrocon '99, I had a better idea of where and how I wanted to express myself as a fur. Constructing a fursuit was one of those ambitions. Straying from my phenotype, I decided that I could get the most use out of the creation of a simple, low budget dalmatian character. This would allow year round use as a public relations tool and mascot for the volunteer fire department which I belong to. Ashes costume consists of three main parts: Lyonshel Latex Prosthetic and make up, white spandex unitard spotted with fabric marker, and my original issued fire gear from 1987.
Ashes was born in June of 2000, weeks before his debut at Anthrocon 2000. However, at that time, while the suit had a purpose, it had no name. The name came as part of a competition with the children attending the department fire prevention program. The children at the program suggested the name "Ashes" for the costume. The name has stuck ever since. Ashes' made his first public and fire department debut at the August 2000 Guyasuta Day Parade in Sharpsburg. Since then he has participated in more than a dozen local parades, shared lessons of fire prevention with nearly 200 children, and attended three Anthrocon Furry Conventions.
